Irish National Badminton Championships Results 

Evans takes 7th Crown as Magees' continue their dominance. The 2012 Irish National Championships Finals took place In Baldoyle badminton Centre and with the Olympic hopeful's home along with some of Ireland's finest young players, spectators enjoyed some top class badminton!

Men's Singles: In the Men's singles Scott Evans world number 65 retained his National title with a 7th consecutive win at this event. Scott beat Tony Stephenson in the semi-final with a classy 2 set victory to secure a place in the final. On the other side Stuart Lightbody continued his good form beating 3/4 seed 17 year old Joshua Magee to book his place in the final to play Evans. But it would be one step to far for lightbody as he met an inform Evans. Scott dominated the final from start to finish winning 21-5 21-10 in 25 minute match.

The nationals has always been one of the most exciting dates on the Irish calendar and with the strong field including all Olympic hopefuls at home competing at the finals, this weekend provided a great spectacle for any badminton spectators in attendance. Some smashing badminton once again as Evans and the Magee's continued to show their class. Back to Olympic Qualification for these guys as the younger players got a taste of what it takes to be the best in this sport.

 

Irish National Badminton Championships 

The 2012 Irish National Championships is set to take place in Dublin at Baldoyle Badminton Centre this weekend and once again it has attracted Ireland's top talent. With Irish Olympic Hopeful's Scott Evans, Chloe Magee and Sam Magee all in attendance it is set to be an exciting weekend for all badminton fans out there!

Men's Singles: In the Men's singles Scott Evan's world number 65 is hot favourite to retain his National title on his quest for a 7th consecutive win at this event. Scott Burnside is seeded number two for this event and will lead the charge as the draw compete to challenge Evan's Dominance. Tony Stephenson and Joshua Magee make up the rest of the seeding's and will be the big contenders for the semi-final spots. Niall Tierney is another name to watch out for having won this year's Ulster Open, with only four seeds Niall is not ranked in the draw so there is potential for an exciting quarter final match up for him with Scott Burnside.

In the Mixed Doubles world number 40 Sam and Chloe Magee are putting their Olympic campaign on hold as they try to take a 5th consecutive national title. The main contenders will be number 2 seeds Daniel Magee and Fiona Glennon and 3/4 seeds another brother and sister combination of Ciaran and Sinead Chambers. Stuart Lightbody and Caroline Black make up the other 3/4 spot and will hope to take a semi-final spot against one seeds Sam and Chloe. In the Bottom side of the draw Magee and Glennon and Sinead and Ciaran Chambers are favourite to meet to make up the other semi-final.

About Scott Evans - Ireland's number 1 Men's singles badminton player

Scott Evans is Ireland's number 1 Men's singles badminton player and became the first Irishman ever to compete at Olympic level at the Beijing Summer Olympics 2008.

Scott has represented Ireland at all levels and his biggest achivement to date was playing in the Denmark Super Series 2007 where he took his place amongst the worlds top 32 shuttlers after beating three players inside the world's top 25 along the way. A first for an Irish Badminton Player.

Scott was also the beaten finalist in the Croatian Open 2007 and the Irish International 2008. Scott was the first Irish player to achieve a quarter finals in the European Championships 2008 where he lost out to eventual winner and world number 5 Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark.

Scott is currently living and training in Denmark under the watchfull eye of former Danish great and world No 1 Jim Laugesen. Scott currently plays for Gentofte BC in the Danish Premier League.
